A police chase has shattered the quiet of a village on the outskirts of Darlington this morning as a pursued vehicle ended up hanging over a millpond
At least three police cars appeared to follow a black car as it sped down a narrow cul-de-sac in the village of Croft-on-Tees.
"It flashed past in a streak," said an eyewitness.
A man seems to have been apprehended on the riverbank.
Eyewitnesses say the car was being pursued on the A167 when it veered off into the village.
It drove over a kerb outside the Croft Spa Hotel, causing damage to its underside.
It then careered down Monkend Terrace, pursued by one marked police car and two unmarked ones, leaving tyre tracks in the mud.
The terrace ends at Croft mill, where the car smashed into brick outhouse, causing considerable damage. It came to a rest on the edge of the millpond with its bonnet up.
Police officers were later seen surrounding a man on the Hurworth Place side of the river.
