The flames destroyed the area and filled the skies with thick, black smoke at the allotment site which is plagued by thieves and vandals

A Teesside allotment site plagued by vandals and thieves is now at the centre of an arson investigation.

It took three fire crews to put out the blaze at the Chester Road allotments, in Hartlepool, at the weekend and now police have confirmed the fire is being treated as arson. Several allotment buildings were left in ruins and numerous hens were killed.

In March, angry allotment holders spoke out about the amount of break-ins and vandalism at the site, saying it was happening on an almost weekly basis. They said problems are so frequent that many allotment holders are just walking away from their much-loved hobby.
