Thieves have stolen more than £10,000-worth of fuel from properties across Cumbria, according to police. As the cost of living soars, officers have issued an urgent warning to residents and businesses throughout the region.

UK-wide, fuel-related crime has increased by almost 90 per cent in the first three months of 2022. And police say the majority of these crimes occur at commercial properties and in more rural areas of the county.

So far this year there have been 21 reports of fuel thefts following a recent spike in crude oil prices. The cost of heating oil has also increased, leading to an increase in theft offences involving heating oil.

Fuel Thefts have increased by 88.5 per cent so far in 2022 across the UK. A spokesman for the police said: "Reports have been received relating to thefts from tanks at properties and commercial premises in rural locations.

"Cumbria alone has had 21 reported fuel thefts so far this year with a combined value in excess of £10,000. To assist in reducing these offences we ask you to be our eyes and ears to tell us who is targeting you and your property."
