POLICE and the fire service are investigating after a series of blazes in a village this morning.

Firefighters were initially called out to reports of a house fire in Clapham Street, Denholme, at 3.40am, which was followed by two other fires nearby.

In total, seven people received medical assistance, with four of them being taken to hospital.

Police are treating the incidents as arson, it was confirmed this afternoon.

Crews from Bingley, Keighley and Fairweather Green fire stations attended the initial call.

On arrival, it was discovered that a vehicle – a Peugeot 206 – parked outside a house was ablaze, and smoke had seeped into the terraced property. The occupants – a family of four – had made their way to an attic bedroom to escape the smoke.

Firefighters tackled the car blaze while colleagues entered the house and helped the family to safety.

One member of the family was given treatment for smoke inhalation, but no one was seriously injured.

There was some external damage to the house.

A special high-pressure fan was used to help clear smoke from the property.

A West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said: "On 13 June at 03.40am we were called to Clapham street in Denholme to reports of a house on fire.

"This was found to be a vehicle fire that had spread to the property.
