A man has been charged following a series of oil thefts in the Barnard Castle area.

The 42-year-old, from North Yorkshire, was arrested on August 3 after rural community members alerted officers to suspicious activity.

Officers were then able to use police systems to track a suspect vehicle down and detain a man in connection with the incidents.

The man was charged with theft and is due to appear at Suffolk Magistrates court on September 6.

A man in his 30s was also arrested in connection with the incidents.

He has since been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Detective Sarah Hindmarsh, from the South Durham Crime team, said: “We work closely with our rural communities through the Ruralwatch scheme and are grateful to members who continue to be our eyes and ears on the ground in the fight against rural crime.
