A devastating fire at a beauty spot close to the I’m A Celebrity castle in North Wales has been blamed on careless visitors. Police are investigating the blaze on land on the edge of Gwrych Woods above Llanddulas and Abergele, Conwy.
A large swathe of limestone grassland was scorched black by a fire that may have caused “irreparable harm” to local habitats. The area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) with important populations of butterflies, moths and, in winter, lesser horseshoe bats.
Rural crime team (RCT) officers from North Wales Police visited the site yesterday with Natural Resources Wales (NRW) and the Gwrych Castle Trust. Police said they will be keeping a close eye on the site, which lies close to the Tan-yr-Ogof caves.
