They proceeded to connect an artic trailer to the lorry cab that they were driving at the time.

After, they smashed through the locked gate and made off with what police believed to be around £1 million worth of stock.

Officers immediately headed to the area and located the vehicle coming off the A1 at Wetherby.

The driver jumped from the cab, however, and made off on foot down Hawthorn-Strewn embankment, according to police.
