A TOTAL of 17 dogs were seized by police last week, some in “very poor condition”, following four search warrants in the Caernarfon and Dolgellau areas.

North Wales Police (NWP) say there was also evidence of “badger persecution”.

NWP’s Rural Crime Team said: “On March 9 and 10, the Rural Crime Team conducted four search warrants in the Caernarfon and Dolgellau areas, along with RSPCA under the Wildlife and Countryside Act and Animal Welfare Act, following reports of badger persecution.

“Police seized 17 dogs, some in very poor condition, requiring urgent surgery, along with other evidence of badger persecution.

“North Wales Police are committed to working with our partners to tackle badger persecution; a cruel activity which exposes animals to unnecessary suffering.

“Under the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Act 2021, those committing the most serious animal cruelty crimes to a domestic animal in England and Wales can face prosecution with up to five years in prison.”
