A SOMERSET farmer has been hospitalised after he was struck with a rock while working in a field.

Christopher Pine, 70, was ploughing a field in Creech St Michael, near Taunton, when he was attacked by a dog walker.

“Without any provocation or anything else, this walker threw dirt at him as he was driving past, so he stopped to ask ‘what’s the problem’ to find out why he’d done this,” said his wife, jane Pine.

“He was then told ‘don’t plough the footpath’, which of course he wasn’t – he does everything 100 per cent correctly. We rent the field so in a sense you’re even more careful with what you do.”

After a brief exchange in which Mr Pine informed the man of his right to work the field, the dog walker picked up a rock and and threw it at the farmer’s head before running off.

Mr Pine suffered cuts on the side of his head, which resulted in heavy bleeding.
