A rural area of Somerset has seen a spike in the number of fly-tipping incidents in the last year, new statistics have revealed. While other areas of the county have seen the number of cases of dumped rubbish fall, Sedgemoor has seen a nine per cent rise in incidents.

In 2020/21, the district had 1,081 cases of reported fly-tipping. But in 2021/22, this has risen to 1,182.

In a staggering 477 of the cases, rubbish was fly tipped on land owned by the local authority, Sedgemoor District Council. In another 690 incidents, rubbish was dumped on the highway, while in another 45 cases, rubbish was left on footpaths and bridleways.
