There has been a spate of break-ins on tractors around Staffordshire, police have revealed. At least nine tractors have been targeted by crooks since March 10.

The farm machines are being broken into for GPS trackers fitted to the equipment. Staffordshire Police says more than £25,000 worth of devices have been reported stolen in the last 30 days.

On April 4, it was reported that approximately £10,000 worth of GPS devices were stolen from two tractors parked at a premises on Stafford Road, Stone. The theft is believed to have taken place at some point between Tuesday, March 20, and Monday, April 4, said police.

Last month, four similar incidents were reported across Burton-upon-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Stafford. A total of £15,000-worth of GPS devices were stolen near Little Onn Road, Stafford on March 10; Wharmadine Lane, Newcastle-under-Lyme on March 25; Willoghbridge Lane, Newcastle-under-Lyme on March 25; and Duffield Lane, Burton-upon-Trent on March 29.

Seven tractors were damaged during the break-ins.

Chief Inspector Mark Thorley, rural wildlife crime lead, said: "Those who reside in rural locations should leave their tractors in view of CCTV wherever possible and ensure they are secure. Consider securing your GPS devices with a PIN system, ensuring they are concealed from view.
