Less than 5% of sheep farmers receive direct contact from the owners of dogs that have been involved in an attack on their livestock, a new survey says.

Archie, a seven-year-old red cocker spaniel, was taken in a burglary at his home in the Barden area of Leyburn during the early hours of Friday 8 April.

Livestock owners are being warned that one of the costliest crimes to the farming industry, sheep thefts, could become a trend as consumers struggle with increases in the cost of living, higher fuel prices and higher food prices in the supermarket.

The offence took place at some time between 2.30pm and 4pm 9th March.
